The United Nations General Assembly- Special Political and Decolonization Committee
Introducing the First committee of BJEM Model United Nations 2019 :
The United Nations General Assembly – Special Political and Decolonization Committee
.
The source of this committee’s power lies in the chapter XI of the United Nations Charter, which essentially, is committed to the empowerment and preservation of the rights and dignities of the people belonging to the non-self-governing territories. Along with this, SPECPOL also looks into other disputes of international concern in a panoramic view. The committee passes resolutions with suggestions on the optimal ways for the United Nations and all of its member states to address the issues of the colonized people.
.
According to its mandate, the committee discusses matters pertaining to self-determination, decolonization, and peacekeeping efforts. Although SPECPOL is derived from the Disarmament and International Security Committee, it takes up issues that UNGA DISEC does not address, in addition to looking at topics with a wider scope. SPECPOL stands out from the rest of the committees as it focuses on topics like occupation, colonization, and subjugation, all the while maintaining a primary aim of reducing the dependencies of all the countries on outside powers.
.
Look forward to some intense debating sessions in this inimitable committee!
